This is Bill from the Bronx. All-American boy savoring victory in Germany. Look at that smile!

Bill's dad was from Germany. Didn't matter. Immigrant families are loyal to countries that are loyal back.

I learned that from Bill, my grandfather.

Here's what today means to me:
An American soldier stands tall, looking over his shoulder and smiling. I often think about this photo, not just on Veterans Day. This is my grandfather, an American GI standing triumphant at the end of WWII in Germany -- after defeating his own father's homeland. Look at that smile. Nobody would question his loyalty to the United States. Bill was born in the Bronx, loved baseball, and retired after 40 years with the Army and Department of Defense. He escaped from frigid ocean waters when a Nazi U-boat sank his ship. Maybe the one who pulled the trigger was one of his distant relatives. Bill dedicated his life to this country, not because of a sense of the past but a sense of the future. That's the American Dream to me. We're all immigrants when you go back far enough. We somehow wound up in this crazy experiment in democracy, and in order for it to thrive we must embrace others no matter where they or their families came from. That's how we build loyalty to something greater. Our nation's leaders must take that vision into account when they make decisions about our military, whether it's where we send them or how we take care of them when they come home. Happy Veterans Day to all who serve a future that makes us smile.

Roundtree was so aggressively manly as Shaft the next person to portray him could only be be Samuel L. Jackson, and they put "STILL THE MAN" on posters to rub it in everyone's face that he's Mr. Manly Man.

Richard Noticias LA is the TikTok livestreamer shot last week by ICE in Los Angeles.

Today was his initial hearing in court.

His teenage son hasn't been allowed to see him in a week, not even in hospital. Lawyer asked judge if they could hug before leaving court. Judge said no. Heartbreaking.

We’re about to enter the sixth month of Trump’s plan to rid the country of undocumented immigrants. Sycophants are bragging that he’s doing the job, but they’re not caring to look at the mess left in its wake that’s becoming more and more perilous for everyone involved. They insist that those who are executing and planning raids are professionals, but professionals don’t make constant pendejos out of themselves.

I've been on the ground a couple times at LA protests this year and reviewed endless hours of footage. Mel's account perfectly and beautifully captures all the humanity, the exasperation, and the chaos when protesters encounter LAPD. Bravo.
At multiple points in the night, some officers were filmed wiping what appeared to be tears away from their eyes; I can’t pretend to know what goes through the rank-and-file’s minds as they man the caution tape of their “command center.” Boredom? Anger? Fear? Defiance in the face of an angry crowd? Perhaps they feel the tug of some deep seated thought that tells them they're on the wrong side of this. Perhaps they feel nothing. For some officers, it's clear they get a kick out of regularly menacing a group of unarmed demonstrators outside the MDC. The usual suspects always find a way to muscle to the front of the line and raise their riot munitions weapons at chest or eye-level, sending demonstrators scattering as they sweep the crowd with the barrels of their neon green guns. For months, I've watched their irritation turn to full-blown fury as their superiors struggle to keep them in line. What a true lack of consequences and unchecked use of power does to a motherfucker--

Law enforcement experts say there’s a simple reason why many agencies bar officers from shooting at moving cars, even if drivers appear to be attempting to ram them: Police service weapons are unlikely to stop a speeding vehicle, and firing a barrage of rounds might only serve to increase the danger faced by officers and bystanders if the driver is shot and unable to control the car. The U.S. Department of Justice has also advised police departments not to shoot at moving vehicles, even when a suspect is driving toward an officer. “First, it is difficult to shoot at a moving car with accuracy. Missed shots can hit bystanders or others in the vehicle. Second, if the driver is disabled by the shot, the vehicle may become unguided, making it potentially more dangerous,” the agency wrote in a 2014 summary of an investigation into the Cleveland Police Department’s use of force.

In 2021, Los Angeles City Council ordered LAPD to produce a report on its treatment of journalists.

LAPD never did it. Blew off City Council for 4+ years now.

Wonder if it'll come up in Tuesday's meeting.

Proceedings: (IN CHAMBERS) ORDER RE DEFENDANTS’ EX PARTE APPLICATION FOR STAY PENDING APPEAL [98] On September 10, 2025, the Court granted Plaintiffs’ Motion for Preliminary Injunction. [Dkt. 83]. Defendants filed a Notice of Appeal nearly a month later. [Dkt. 89]. The instant Ex Parte Application for Stay of the Preliminary Injunction Pending Appeal (“Application”) was filed on October 15. [Dkt. 98]. Defendants contend that immediate, ex parte relief is required in light of the “No Kings” rally scheduled to take place in Los Angeles (and across the country) on October 18. Application at 2. They also assert various “workability” concerns and other substantive arguments largely mirroring those raised and addressed in prior briefing. Id. at 12–31. To justify ex parte relief, the moving party must show that its “cause will be irreparably prejudiced if the underlying motion is heard according to regular noticed motion procedures,” and that it is “without fault in creating the crisis that requires ex parte relief, or that the crisis occurred as a result of excusable neglect.” Mission Power Eng’g Co. v. Cont’l Cas. Co., 883 F. Supp. 488, 492 (C.D. Cal. 1995). Here, Defendants waited five weeks after the Court issued its injunction to file their Application, during which time the Court presumes Defendants complied with its order to disseminate the injunction. Furthermore, they waited almost three weeks from when they first indicated to Plaintiffs that they would be seeking a stay. Adam Rose, press rights chair at the Los Angeles Press Club, told LAist in a written statement, “Karen Bass is quick to run to the media for attention to criticize Trump for violating court orders (rightfully so!), but when the media is assaulted by her own LAPD, she never says a word.” Rose continued: “Instead of holding the department accountable, the city is spending even more money to hire an outside law firm so they can effectively beg a judge for permission to keep assaulting journalists for just doing their job. The mayor of Los Angeles needs to take charge here, and Bass has been completely absent.”
