“The legislation that ends the current lapse in appropriations must include express language appropriating funds for back pay for furloughed employees, or such payments cannot be made,” Mark Paoletta, OMB’s general counsel, wrote to White House budget director Russell Vought. By that interpretation, furloughed workers would not be paid when this shutdown ends. Lawmakers are considering a seven-week stopgap measure that would simply extend federal funding at current levels. That legislation passed the House last month but remains hung up in the Senate. It does not include additional language on back pay. ... But Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-South Dakota) told reporters that back pay was “a fairly standard practice” and that he wasn’t familiar with OMB’s argument. “My understanding is, yes, that they would get paid,” he said. “I’ll find out. I haven’t heard this up until now.” Administration officials hope the memo will maximize Republicans’ leverage in shutdown negotiations with Democrats... Democrats indicated the move might have the opposite effect. “Honestly, the impact it seems to have had on Democrats here is people kind of digging in their heels harder and not wanting to give an inch to those kind of hollow threats,” Rep. James Walkinshaw (D-Virginia) told The Post on Tuesday. “And the latest threat to not pay furloughed federal workers at the end of the shutdown I think is in precisely the same category. Malliotakis spent months lying to us about this bill, falsely claiming, "Nothing in the budget resolution cuts healthcare."

Now she can't hide from the fact that we were right all along... so instead, she's hiding from us!

Mehdi Hasan tweeted: "Senator @SenGillibrand called on @alfranken to resign. I think she should resign for falsely smearing @ZohranKMamdani as a terrorist. He has never invoked a 'global jihad.' This is a nasty, Islamophobic racist smear for a sitting Dem senator." Evan Lukaske (Gillibrand's Communications Director) responded: "Senator Gillibrand misspoke in that instance. As she noted subsequently, her concern was the refusal to denounce globalize the intifada rhetoric. If @mayaforcouncil.bsky.social voted at all in 2020, it wasn't in Brooklyn. Which raises the question: Is she lying about moving to Brooklyn "more than six years ago," or did she vote somewhere else despite not being a resident there, or did she really not care enough to vote Trump out of office?
In December 2024, Maya Kornberg told City & State NY that she "has lived in Brooklyn for more than six years." But Maya did not register to vote here until August 10, 2022.

The CR vote comes down to whom Senate Dems trust more: their own budget negotiating team or Donald Trump with a slush fund. If you have thoughts about who's more trustworthy, call your senator now at 202-224-3121 and let them know which side they should be on.
Call 202-224-3121 and tell your senator to support Sen. Murray’s short-term CR (S.924), not Trump’s continuing resolve to shut down federal agencies at will. Senate Dems must stand up for Congress’s power of the purse, federal workers, and all Americans who want to stop the Musk-Trump shutdowns and keep the government funded as appropriated.

Dear Minority Leader Jeffries and Minority Leader Schumer, I am writing to ask that you immediately present a credible plan for leading the Democratic opposition through the Republican-caused crisis facing our country... Democrats must... ensur[e] that government spending bills contain assurances that the administration will comply with the Impoundment Control Act and stop summarily firing federal workers and shuttering federal agencies. Since this administration cannot be trusted to follow the terms of a yearlong funding bill, it is imperative that Congress keep the government funded through short-term continuing resolutions, which would allow you to hold the administration accountable if it refuses to distribute the funding that is allocated. Democrats must stay united in demanding a clean, two-week continuing resolution to keep the government funded past the March 14 deadline. And before Democrats vote for another short-term funding bill, it must include guarantees that protect Congress’s power of the purse from Musk and Trump’s unpopular and lawless reign of terror. Voters have elected 215 Members of Congress and 47 senators who caucus with Democrats to represent them. We expect those legislators to vote like Democrats. Democrats must stop lending bipartisan cover to the Trump-Musk coup and hastening the collapse of our constitutional democracy.
