I love these Flamingo editions: 2001 retro eds of 60s titles, so from here they're double retro. Rather appropriate for Ballard somehow... (found in @oxfamgb.bsky.social bookshop Herne Hill)

I'm reading After Midnight, the new Daphne du Maurier collection from Stephen King. What mastery of storytelling & effect. When I was growing up in the 70s, boys didn't read du Maurier, they read Alistair Maclean and Desmond Bagley. Probably a good thing as she'd have scared our socks off

Ridiculous "snub" headline with deliberate image echo of George W Bush's "America is under attack" moment - implying the decision is a threat to American values on a par with 9/11: the Nobel committee as Al-Quaeda

1966 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon followed by 69, 74 and so on to 2000. The 66, the year it all started, fresh as a daisy, a really lovely wine, six decades old and with at least two more before it elegantly begins its slow decline.

Love the reactions of these locals. Basically: "We can't see what all the fuss is about, but at least it gets us on the telly"

1993 to 2017. The first (and last - there were only 400 halves of the 93 and it's almost gone) full vertical of the extraordinary elixir Royal Tokaji Essencia. Story to come on @cluboenologique.bsky.social

Wine Paris kicks off in style w a heaving party at the Automobile Club. Dme Faiveley, Williams Selyem, Pol Roger outdoing each other with torpedo-sized bottles of splendid vintages. This pair from Dme de Chevalier proving that, at any level, the Graves has some of the finest white wines in the world
