Looking at the numbers, 59% of Japanese voted in the last election and of those people, 25% or so voted for Jimintou it seems. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_Ja...

I fear I didn't make it quite clear, however I was replying to the reply to your message. That said, it is positive in a slight way. They DID vote in Jimintou, but their numbers have been decreasing each election. They are only in power right now due to the help of another party's support.

I definitely feel that to be very close to the truth. Sanseito are another party here, reminiscent of Reform in the UK and they are anti-vax, anti-trans and very anti-immigration. They scare me honestly.

That's a really lovely way to look at it! ☺️

I am sure they would very much enjoy Japan. If they can learn and use some Japanese whilst here I think it would be very much appreciated. The regular tourist areas are very packed, so the height might be an advantage. Also Mt Fuji is often buried in cloud.

That said, Japan like most countries is suffering from issues of racism, demographic issues and a growing gap between the rich and poor. I personally believe capitalism and neo-liberalism are to blame, as well as far right propaganda.

You are welcome. I'm British / Australian but I live in Japan. I don't pretend to know everything about this place, but I do speak Japanese and know that what I read on the English web and what I hear/experience are very different.

It's certainly true that Jimintou are all different flavours of shite-cream. I would say there is a lot of nuance which is being left out of the conversation though.

There are some universities I believe have English courses. Alternatively learning Japanese or becoming a teacher here are other possible pathways if they are interested in staying for a while.

I certainly agree with that. I would also like for all countries to know about the crimes of the past as a means to work on preventing it in the future.

The government seemingly wanted the tourist money but failed to do anything about infrastructure. Prices keep going up and wages are stagnant. Like most countries foreigners get the blame for neo-liberal nonsense.
October 22, 2025 at 3:07 AM
That's right. There is also an issue with immigrants of course from some groups and sectors, but a lot of areas such as Nishinari in Osaka which were once poor, working class areas have been turned into Airbnb land and the poor have been pushed out.

She is from Jimintou, a right wing party. It is the same party that has been in power for almost 80 years. The party has various factions, some more and some less right wing. She is particularly right wing.

You are very welcome. It is horrible news that this person and the party are in power and will likely start lurching further to the right, but I often see a lack of nuance in discussions surrounding Japan.
October 22, 2025 at 2:56 AM
I'm pretty sure they do. Not everyone of course. It could also be argued that the same issue is true for the whole world atm. I was taught in Australia about the terrors of the Nazis and there are literal Nazis on the streets protesting.
October 22, 2025 at 2:55 AM
Racism is a problem here, but that is true for all countries and there are a lot of people working against racism here as well. Painting the whole country as racist seems problematic.
October 22, 2025 at 2:53 AM
This is widely propagated, but it is false. It is true that Japan doesn't always teach enough, they do talk about the war.
October 22, 2025 at 2:50 AM
The "Japanese" technically didn't.
October 22, 2025 at 2:46 AM
They had to go to another right populist party to make a coalition and don't have a good hold on power.
October 22, 2025 at 2:44 AM
Her party is the only one that ever gets elected and has basically had a monopoly since the end of WW2. That is changing and they had to align with a religious (leftish?) party for years but they abandoned the main party when Sanae was chosen. They almost didn't get into power.
October 22, 2025 at 2:44 AM
Just to make things slightly clearer, she wasn't elected by the general populace, her party and another PM barely were. The party pushed out the last one and the pool of new candidates was poor so they chose her in-party. The right is rising here though for economic/tourism reasons.
