So much of it is propaganda that made sure to paint "communism" with a broader and broader brush, including wealth taxes these days while ignoring the fact that high taxes happened during McCarthy.
Like "corporate liberals", preaching liberty but also full of it.

As if "trad Conservative" ever solidly meant anything but confused principles of a movement, less historical lit. They've been all over the place, boycotting— Goldwater, Will, Reagan, Limbaugh on limited govt to protect financial interests or lobbies they like, not true individual freedoms.

Not zero. Ammo and gear were limited, and more gear was deployed later on. In strict procedure, people took it seriously. Plenty still take it seriously despite the reality show.
