Cognitive dissonance is a bitch. A lot of people are unprepared to deal with the embarrassment and ego crush that comes with realizing you're wrong. It takes a lot of humility, emotional intelligence, and self awareness to learn from mistakes. It's comparatively easy to remain confidently wrong.
