if you can live through february, you’ll live another year.
~ The Boys of Summer // Roger Kahn ~

More baseball. Huge, dense book about the 1950s Dodger team and their lives post baseball. A book I will cite that I’ve read if I want to appear intellectual & well-read.

~ Moneyball // Michael Lewis ~

I think that - in 2025 - the idea that data drives decisions in sport isn’t nearly as radical as it was when Lewis was putting Moneyball together, so the impact is dampened.

The story & details are still enjoyable though, even with my very basic baseball knowledge.

~ There’s Always This Year // Hanif Abdurraqib ~

Took me out of the reading slump that the last book put me in. I’m probably not the target demographic for this book, but Abdurraqib’s writing is superbly engaging.

We’re back on form.

~ Beginners Guide To Breaking & Entering // Andrew H Murray ~

First flop of the year!

Interesting concept, really poorly done, imo. It’s a super easy read but there’s nothing here other than a long-winded tale with a romance awkwardly (and needlessly) crammed in.

Avoid.

~ The Fisherman // John Langan ~

Lovecraftian Horror. Super, super weird in places and a rather odd narrative structure but I thought it was first class. Bit of a departure from what I usually read.

~ Conclave // Richard Harris ~

Picked due to award season hype and enjoyed it a lot. Incredibly detailed, which is fantastic, but can also be a tiny bit of a barrier if you know nothing about the Papacy going into it.

~ The Haunting of Hill House // Shirley Jackson ~~

The OG. I think that by today’s standards, it’s a little tame for what most people would think of when you say “supernatural horror”, but it’s still super enjoyable.

~ East of Eden // John Steinbeck ~

Meaty, but entirely enthralling. Read Of Mice and Men last year for the first time and wanted to read this off the back of it. Easy to see why it’s regarded so highly.

~ The Galton Case by Ross MacDonald ~

Surprisingly great. Detective noir from 1959. 8th in a series but totally works as a standalone book. Really, really enjoyed this.

Due to prolonged seasonal depression - or just general current affairs - I’ve found that lately I’ve been revisiting music I listened to in my youth to get a sweet, numbing hit of nostalgia.

s/o to some of the best albums of the late 00s

~ Filterworld by Kyle Chayka ~

Interesting start. Interesting end. Huge lulls in between. Loved the concept - and I agree with loads of what Chayka argues - but it’s not conveyed in a consistently engaging way.

Digging out my old iPod though.

Such a huge album. I’ve been heavily re-listening to The Xcerts recently and I would argue that ITCWWS is one of the best Scottish albums this century.

Let’s not talk about Scatterbrain, though…

~ Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky ~

Keeping the strong start going. Great science fiction, but I have to say; the title is awful and irrationally irritates me.

~ Clear by Carys Davies ~

Enjoyed this a lot. Short but sweet, really well written and hugely engaging. The strong start to 2025 continues.

📚🧵 2025 Reads:

~ Orbital by Samantha Harvey ~

Really good, but not as good as I was led to believe by reviews / accolades etc.

Strong start to the year, though.

Watched all of Severance for the first time in two days and it’s the best thing I’ve seen for years.

If I’d saw that finale two years ago, I would’ve utterly lost my shit knowing I had to wait til 2025 for the next season.

Little 4x4 of the albums I’ve enjoyed the most this year.

There’s definitely an unavoidable recency bias, but hey ho.

Feels hugely strange to be coming away from Hampden genuinely excited about the performance of a young, attacking Scottish player.

Doak looks like he could be a fucking baller. Confidence grew in the second half & he had Gvardiol backpedaling plenty times.
