Ultimately, I think I get wrapped up in these for the same reason I'm currently marveling at all the different phases the Beach Boys went through – the evolution of (e.g.) the Black Widow over time feels emblematic of larger cultural shifts.

Thanks! Yeah, every time, I think, "This will be short! No need for a lot of details!", and then I run into things like Iron Man using a slide rule or the Wasp taking a full page to fight a sparrow, and, I mean, I can't leave *those* details out.
