I've been reading Hamlet on the Holodeck by Janet H. Murray recently and it's fascinating how far back this type of conversation goes, and how far we've come!
It's been a good conversation starter amongst my gamedev colleagues.

I don't think you had many options beyond lots of if/else statements back then. I look back at games from the 80's and 90's and love how many tricks people came up with to get on the cutting edge. Some of the innovation at the time was mind blowing 🤯.
