Hope to achieve basic level polymath-ery before 70. Living in and loving the Languedoc. Lifelong journalist, writer, repository of trivia, slowly learning French. Curious about life. Fan of France's 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen.
Would someone please tell me if the women who took the trans issue to the supreme court thought about having trans men in "powder rooms"? Just asking...

Listeners to BBC's Radio 4's "Today" programme will remember when James Naughtie famously mispronounced then minister Jeremy Hunt's surname ... OK, it's not as dramatic, my hearing isn't what it was and I was slowly emerging from fairly deep sleep, but did I really hear the words "President Slump"?

Why is everyone using the "beautiful" word tariff when it's an Orwellian euphemism for "sales tax" like any import duty?

Perhaps I'm naïve, but I can't understand why anyone would want to vote for a political candidate who has been convicted of stealing taxpayers'/voters' money. If they steal when they're not in office, what would they do in government? One only has to look across the Atlantic for one answer.

For all its wonders, too many catering operations in France still have to wake up to the commercial realities - and financial advantages - of remembering their market potential include vegetarians and vegans ..

If capitalists are so smart, how come they don't acknowledge that markets are too slow, wasteful and inefficient to deliver public services? One Winston Spencer Churchill, fetishised in the Oval Office, knew that democracy was inefficient but the least worst form of governance we had. Erm ..?

If bullying is unacceptable at work, then why is everyone grovelling to it on the world stage and not calling it out for what it is?

Dear Friends and others in the US, please follow the example of UK TV journalist Julia H-B and ask your Congress Critters, "If the US was invaded, which parts of it would you give away?" And yourself, which would YOU give away?

Congratulations to everyone working on RTÉ Radio 1's "Morning Ireland" programme today. Absolutely amazing coverage of the storm, especially with so many losing power and phone signals. Public service broadcasting at its best. Well done.

The medals were designed by a jewelry maker owned by the French luxury conglomerate, which has declined to comment on their deterioration.

Forswear anyone who writes "the truth is" or "the facts are" .... All we ever have is the best we know at any single moment, depending on information available to us and what we choose. Journalists and politicians should know that. As Stephen Fry noted when he left QI, "facts" change over time ...

A wonderful friend who was an organist in Boston (Mass) played a Sunday afternoon recital there probably 15 years ago now ... Télématin on France 2 carried a report about repairing the instrument. Ken was a sweet, dear man who loved France. (He also did a gig at St Sulpice.) Thinking of you today.
