Don't mind me, just over here performatively reading in public am I doing this right? (Also Red Star Hustle by @sentencebender.bsky.social is amazing and y'all should read it, in public or otherwise.)

This is an absolutely gorgeous collection! Not only is Call and Response by @seraph76.bsky.social full of stunning fiction, it's a physically beautiful book too. Just look at the sprayed edges!

A dark, frightening and visceral read that treats the body as a haunted house that the protagonist can't leave. If you're looking for some truly unsettling horror, I highly recommend The Graceview Patient by @caitlinstarling.com!

Fear, much like beauty, is in the eye of the Beholder. Happy Halloween!

And because Apprehension is a Saga Double, flipping it around also gets me the thematically appropriate Red Star Hustle by @sentencebender.bsky.social, which I'm also really looking forward to reading!

My recent book mail is pleasingly color coordinated and matches my office walls! Really looking forward to these: Call and Response by Christopher Caldwell, @gwendolynkiste.bsky.social's forthcoming collection The Haunted Houses She Calls Her Own, and Apprehension by @maryrobinettekowal.com.

It is the worst being a kitten. No one at all ever feeds you and certainly no one gave you a whole handful of treats right before this picture.

Spotted on my walk to get coffee. A very Philly pumpkin!

I'm very much enjoying this perfectly creepy seasonal read. The October Film Haunt by @michaelwehunt.bsky.social is exactly the kind of uneasy horror I'm in the mood for at this time of year.

Drinking coffee out of my @apexmag.bsky.social mug this morning, which is the perfect reminder that they're running a Kickstarter right now to support another year of fabulous art, fiction, essays, and reviews!

Woot! An ARC of Ballad of the Bone Road arrived in today's mail! The book itself releases in January and is currently available for preorder. Now that I can hold a copy in my hands, it's finally starting to feel real!

Reading my way through this excellent short story collection. If you're looking for some great short speculative fiction, I highly recommend The Greatest Fight of Sunny Granada and Other Stories by Kenneth Yu.

If you're looking for an excellent horror read, Staircase in the Woods by @chuckwendig.bsky.social is a wonderful exploration of trauma, friendship, and how houses and people become haunted.
August 9, 2025 at 3:45 PM
This is just to say that @wiswell.bsky.social's Wearing the Lion is absolutely gorgeous. If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend. Wiswell's ongoing exploration of kindness in the face of brutal circumstances and impossible choices is truly lovely.
