Mama Might Be Better Off Dead: The Failure of Health Care in Urban America by Laurie Kaye Abraham

This book absolutely knocked me sideways in grad school. It follows four generations of a poor Black family in Chicago for one year and details the many failures of the system as they interact with it.

No Place Like Home? Feminist Ethics and Home Health Care by Jennifer A. Parks

This book explores the role of women as both paid and unpaid caregivers.

I actually work for a nonprofit in this field, so it's very relevant to my job! Unfortunately, this book is still highly relevant 20 years later.

Cat break!

Lucy has been watching me sit on the floor surrounded by books for like an hour, and is utterly bemused.

This next book looks at women as patients:

Women, Ethics, and Inequality in U.S. Healthcare: "To Count Among the Living" by Aana Marie Vigen

Vigen interviewed Black and Latine women about their experiences with breast cancer, and explores questions about interacting with the medical system.

Undivided Rights: Women of Color Organize for Reproductive Justice by Jael Silliman, Marlene Gerber Fried, Loretta Ross, and Elena R. Gutiérrez

The writers are all feminist reproductive rights activists, and the book shares (some of) the differing history, experiences, and perspectives of women--

Bioethics and Women: Across the Life Span by Mary Briody Mahowald

Originally intended for clinicians who provide health care to women, the scope broadened a bit to be more readable by a wider audience, but it still is great for clinicians or anyone who interacts with the medical system.

Next up is Feminist Approaches to Bioethics: Theoretical Reflections and Practical Applications by Rosemarie Tong (whose name I just realized I spelled incorrectly earlier in thread 😳)
August 5, 2025 at 1:54 AM
Feminism & Bioethics: Beyond Reproduction, edited by Susan M. Wolf

Possibly the best available overview of feminist bioethics, at least in the 90s. Contributors include several people whose books will be featured later in this thread, like Rosemary Tong, Mary Briody Mahowald, and Dorothy Roberts.

I didn't get the nail polish because it would match this tumbler, but it's neat that it does!

It was raining today, so I parked on the lower level and, uh, let's just say that if I never post again, y'all'll know it's because I was murdered by a slasher movie villain.

Nails of the week! Wireless Mode by Holo Taco. This is so much prettier and cooler in person than in the product photos or even videos. I'm tempted to get the whole drop!
