| Idk what I'm doing but I'm trying to be better
Metal Gear was cool. It has similar appeal to Zelda 1. It's all about exploring, finding tools and solving the "world puzzle". It expects you to take notes and remember important info which I really like. Sadly a few of the items are a bit too hidden imo which can be frustrating.

Castlevania IV is like a better version of Castlevania in lots of ways. Better controls, you can whip in 8 directions, the levels are more interesting, etc. But it's a shame that planning has been deemphasized. Your subweapon or level of upgrade is not that relevant.

This is the part I enjoyed the most. Bosses that feel impossible with just the whip can become a joke. Wish the manual was more clear about how to get this upgrades though. You are supposed to hit 10 objects with the sub weapon.

It's a fair challenge for the most part but it does have its moments where it feels unmanageable, some bosses in particular. That's where stragedy comes in however. Choosing the right sub weapon and reaching the boss with shot upgrades.

Took me a bit to get used to it but ultimately it was fun. The delay on the whip, the lack of air control and some of the enemies did had me frustrated for some time but eventually I figured it out. It's not only a game of skill but also about correctly planning each stage.

It might be the ranking system with less focus on speed. Gettting an S rank is not a matter of skillful fast execution of a level. Instead you are supposed to farm as many points as you can in the level and you don't need to do it particularly fast. It's just not that fun for me.

They have cool abilities but you can only use them when the game gives you one so they don't really add that much the gameplay. They are ocasional minigames. But what's really disappointing to me is the ranking system.

Sonic can double jump now which is gives you better control and now boost and homing attack are on different buttons which is cool but others mechanics like drifting and side stepping have sadly become purely contextual. The real big addition to the game are the wisps.

The levels are fun but less demanding and engaging than the ones in Unleashed and it feels a bit more automatized and restrictive. A lot of the game are 2D sections that are fine but are less fun than more dedicated 2D games like Rush.

Colors it's one of the most no nonsense just fun Sonic games out there. Pretty visuals, great music and set of fun levels with almost nothing interrupting you. Gameplay is not improved over its prequel tho. In fact, it leans into some of the least appealing aspects of that game.

Episode 2 is an improvement however. It looks nicer, has a bit more story and more importantly, it brings tag actions back. Advance 3 had more and I also liked them more there but these ones are still cool and useful.

Sonic 4 is disappointing as a follow up to Sonic 3. More than a sequel it feels like a weird remake with almost all the level themes coming from the classic games. The gameplay and levels are fine but didn't interest me much. It's not bad, just unremarkable. It offers little new.

All Star Racing is a karting game. Drfiting feels nice. Tracks are good. But it basically does nothing to differentiate itself. It a functional but bare bones karting game. Don't see a reason to play it unless you like Sega characters.

Black Knight is alright. Fun to slash things around. Has a great soundtrack and one of the better stories in the series. Gameplay is nothing amazing tho. Fairly limited and semi automated stuff. Fun enough for an afternoon but not much more. Glad it doesn't overstay its welcome.

Wii Unleashed is a pretty fun game too. It has a bigger focus on more precise steering which does differentiate it. You are gonna be drifting a lot more. That said I still prefer the level design and control of the HD version.

I like the werehog. The combos are visceral, well animated, satisfying to pull off and have their uses. There's a fair amount of room for creative stylish gameplay.
October 15, 2025 at 8:49 PM
Now talking about the Werehog, normally I would be against including obligatory alternatives modes of gameplay like this. They are usually not as good and risk annoying people who came to play as Sonic. But this is one of the very few exceptions where the gamble paid off for me.
October 15, 2025 at 8:49 PM
All of these things add to a game that feels more restrictive than previous entries for me. It feels like there's less room for skips or creative exploits of the level design and that I'm not allowed to control Sonic with the same level of agency. It's harder to go "Offscript".
October 15, 2025 at 8:49 PM
It's more about going forward and making sure you don't crash. Levels are narrow paths that don't overlap and constantly switch to 2D sections. Automation also seems increased not just in the typical ways but in more subtle ways like Sonic turning some corners on his own.
October 15, 2025 at 8:49 PM
The way I would describe it is that in previous games you are controlling a platforming character that can go fast but in Unleashed is like you are driving a high speed vehicle. You cannot control your precise direction as easily.
October 15, 2025 at 8:49 PM
Unleashed is the most polished mainline game so far. All stages are fun to learn, full of split second decisions and have challeging S ranks. Game's much less buggy too. Even the werehog ended up being a fun brawler. Yet, as great as it is, it's also a more restrictive game.
October 15, 2025 at 8:49 PM
Cool game. Probably the best movement and combat in the series. Good conclusion for the story imo. However, a bit limiting for my taste at times. It feels like it blocks you from backtracking too much when I would rather explore at will and have more optional fun stuff to find.

Takopi was amazing. Pretty macabre and sad yet also has a fair amount of dark humour. It's fucked up in the exact ways that appeal to me. It's also beautiful. The animation and character design is outstanding, the type stuff that is great at pulling at your heartstrings.

Some of the most creative, heartfelt and funniest games I've experienced. The music, the writing, the unique gameplay situations. Everything about them works so well together. There's always something funny, charming, surprising or intriguing happening. It's great great great.

Finally got around to watch Stone Ocean and that was really fun. Super creative fights, hype moments, aura and the most insane ending ever lol. Loved the characters. Probably my fav part after 4.
