Harm reduction means taking steps to avoid some of the harms of a certain behavior. For people who smoke cigarettes that can mean switching less harmful products, such as vapes and heated tobacco products, when outright quitting is not available.

Veterans smoke at a higher rate than the civilian population, yet they tend to be strongly motivated to quit. This group presents a big opportunity to improve health and extend lives by providing them with the resources and support they need to stop smoking.

The global burden of smoking isn't shared equally. The vast majority of people who smoke live in low- and middle-income countries. Improving global public health will require an enhanced effort in these regions to help adults who smoke quit in whatever way works for them.
