Great write up from @charlielynch.bsky.social in The National yesterday covering the upcoming 30th Anniversary of the Scottish Oral History Centre. My brilliant advisor and Director of the Centre @ymcfadden.bsky.social front and centre alongside the bona fide legend and founder Arthur McIvor!

Had a fantastic time presenting and attending the @womenshistscot.bsky.social conference on Saturday. Congratulations to all the speakers and particularly @vawright10.bsky.social for her in depth history of women’s housing activism in Scotland. Thanks to @ymcfadden.bsky.social and the team

Glasgow’s had a long history of being exploited in the media as a place of violence, social problems and poverty. In recent years there’s been an trend of shameless lifestyle bloggers using the city in this way for clicks. Disgusting examples below, but there’s so many more on there. Horrible to see

Had a fantastic time this weekend working the Oral History Society’s “Whose Voices?” comference at the University of Strathlyde.

I’ve come away with a renewed sense of the importance of oral history work and a deep appreciation for the talented researchers undertaking it!

Picked this up yesterday at the May Day rally. Great stuff from all the authors, including @rosiehampton.bsky.social and @gavinbrewis.bsky.social writing on the Just Transition and on Ned Culture, respectively

What a day we had marching for May Day! Ended with a range of speeches from care workers fighting for union recognition, Palestinian campaigners, John Foster and Roz Foyer. Came away feeling hopeful and rejuvinated for the struggles ahead

Incredible punk triple header last night at the 02 Academy. Three legends back to back: Negative Approach, Circle Jerks and the Descendents. Put on a great show for a bunch of old boys

Great day out putting the pressure on Labour to back the housing bill, drop their amendments and protect tenants’ rights

Between a third and two fifths of all homes in Wester Hailes were in high rise flats by the time construction finished in 1975. From the 1990s many were demolished, some not lasting even 20 years. I got pictures of some of the surviving stock at the Calders and Hailesland

Last Friday I popped over to Wester Hailes to collect photographs for my dissertation project - it was great to see work being done to the flats in Murrayburn and Dumbryden!

As a result, unlike others in the same scheme and across the city, the tenements at 65 and 67 Boswall Parkway are missing one floor. Aesthetic concerns of those able to afford to buy their houses trumped the need to rehouse overcrowded families from the slums.

Diane Watters writes that in 1935 housebuilders Mactaggart and Mickel succesfully lobbied the Edinburgh Corporation to lower the height of slum clearance tenements in the Royston scheme (right) on Boswall Parkway, as they faced on to their private houses in East Pilton (left).

Fascinating insights tonight from @johnnieandphd.bsky.social at the Scottish Oral History Centre. His work on Scottish Asians, their cuisine, identity and transnational histories is shaping up to be something great

Quote post with first DVD you ever bought.

Folk under this posting Seven Samurai and French New Wave films. How pedestrian! 10-year-old Aaron had a much more refined taste

Did you know Wester Hailes was supposed to have a lake? In its original 1965/66 plan, the scheme was also supposed to be linked together by a central avenue lined with shops and other amenities. The plan referred to it as a ‘20th Century Princes Street’ with housing areas branching off like leaves
