This act improves security, access, and raises minimum standards for renters. But it doesn’t do nearly enough to address unaffordable rents. Which is why ACORN will continue to campaign on tenants’ rights and fight for rent controls!

This is a landmark moment for tenants’ rights, and it wasn’t handed to us from above. We won it! Without the campaigning of the organised tenants movement, this act wouldn’t be exist. But there is more to be done.

April marks SEVEN YEARS since Theresa May first made the commitment to ban S21 evictions. Those 7 years have seen hundreds of thousands of families uprooted by unjust laws that will now finally be changed thanks to the tireless campaigning of the organised tenants movement!

This will:

📍End S21 ‘No Fault’ evictions
📍Abolish bidding wars
📍Ban discrimination against renters on benefits or with children
📍Implement secure open ended tenancies
📍Stop landlords asking for over 1 month of rent upfront
📍Stop landlords unreasonably declining pets

Now after years of being on the front line of resisting evictions, countless actions against landlords, councils and agencies, thousands of emails to MPs and dozens of members representing us in parliament - this law will abolish Section 21🎉

Councils should be supportive, not punitive towards their residents & councils who use harsher collection practices are not recovering more debt than those who make interventions to support people. The only people who win from this current system are the bailiff firms.

At the same time, private bailiff companies are making massive profits, adding on stress, fear, and more debt. Half of people in debt face mental health issues, and 1 in 3 bailiff visits involve threats, rule breaking and illegal behaviour.

People squeezed by the cost of living crisis are being trapped in a debt spiral, unable to pay and with added costs being piled on. One missed £100 council tax payment can quickly snowball into more than £400 in debt, and can make you liable for the entire year’s bill overnight!

We’re organising for a Bailiff Free Britain, to kick these parasites out of our communities once and for all, and fighting for a fairer system.

Leeds is one of the worst councils in the country for referrals to bailiffs over council tax debt.

After months of being ignored by the Chair of Leeds’ Strategy and Resource Board, we soon secured a meeting to put our demands to him.
