The crisis in Myanmar is evolving rapidly. But the main paradigm with which we understand of it (democracy vs authoritarianism) is insufficient. For anyone interested in going beyond the myopic polarisations of the present. Why not go for the big picture instead and think about how global order was reshaped in the “long 20th century”? Might put 2024 in perspective. Just a thought…

Assigned and read this piece with students this week, and in a workshop recently. In my view it is worth taking seriously and grasps some of the more important and interesting aspects of the emerging disorder.
