Mosarin chuckled. “The Drift? Controlling the Drift would be like controlling the sea.” “Can you Pulse too?” “No.” Kex waited a moment for more explanation but none followed. “How do you know what the Drift is like for a Pulser?” “I don’t.” Kex thought the old man would say more but again, he didn’t. Kex shook his head and started to head down the stairs. This was going nowhere. Maybe he could still get some sleep. “You are a ship in the sea,” Mosarin said after a moment. “A sailor cannot hope to control the waters—only to navigate them.” Kex stopped and turned, he thought for a moment. “You control the sky.” Mosarin chuckled again. He seemed absolutely tickled by Kex’s response. “That is what they teach at the Academy now?” He hummed long and flat, thinking perhaps. Kex didn’t know how to answer or if Mosarin even expected an answer. He felt drained and exhausted.

“I left something though.” Zana’s voice sounded smaller than usual. “Left it in the same spot.” Kex blinked at her, not sure what she was referring to. “Makra. On the shelf above where your bed was.” For a moment, Kex could see the little wooden dragon perched above his bed. The brave dragon was a constant companion in their pretend adventures as Kex told Zana old stories of heroes and legends. Zana surprised Kex with a hug that was stronger than her size suggested it should be. She started sobbing while Kex fought back tears. The upcoming changes hit him like a wave. The childhood adventures had long been left behind. New responsibilities and challenges were ahead. There was no turning back.

In the age of the Dragon Wars, when humans sought to bind magic and chain dragons, the Velkorin rose in defiance—we, the people born of the four elements. But the Velkorin were hunted, scattered, and nearly broken. Then came Rhael Stormguard. Though he was not Velkorin himself, he stood with our ancestors. He spoke to dragons and Pulsed. The Stormguard protected and united Velkorin and Dragon. Rhael Stormguard became the living embodiment of balance. When Velkorin choose a surname, it is from his influence. We choose to stand with the elements. We choose to stand with the storm. No one knows what happened to Rhael Stormguard. Some say he became the storm itself, watching from the skies. Others say he walks still, in dreams, waiting for the world to remember.
