In the article, the Sheriff’s Office says it has “immunity” for its actions. This isn’t the ordinary “qualified immunity” from @joannaschwartz. They have asked multiple courts to hold they have full federal "immunity from suit." No court has ruled they have even presented the question properly.

Accepting there is wide variation in “shoes that cost $1,000,” I’m thinking more of the below, where the cost is unrelated to comfort/wear but a free-floating signal “I pay $1,000 for my shoes”.

SCOTUS holds for the first time in history that law enforcement can stop people based on their race. Would it approve roving patrols targeting white people, who commit most of crime in this country, or citizens, who commit crimes at higher rates than non-citizens?

We argue that because state law prohibits officers from arresting people for non-criminal offenses, signing the agreement was arbitrary and capricious.
