We’ve started working on Bracken Fern in the lab, which is a dominant understory plant in northern MI. Surprising to see it still standing with over a foot of snow.

Lots of snow and snow-digging to find our nutrient monitoring soil probes — Winter research at the University of Michigan Biological Station. Our plots near Ann Arbor were frozen solid and we couldn’t remove the probes. The snow in Pellston insulates the soil, so we easily removed the probes.
