I asked VT Rep @mepriestley.com what a "good" state privacy law looks like - and here's her response. I wish I'd asked to what degree adtech processing falls under the category of "what consumers directly asked for..." as that implies an EU style consent requirement is coming - tinyurl.com/y6ysb5um

Privacy & Competition are increasingly at odds.
@epicprivacy.bsky.social wrote a blog post criticizing the French Competition Authorities' position characterizing Apple ATT as anti-competitive.

I invited Alan Butler on @monopolyreport.bsky.social
pod to share his thoughts....

Here's one last snippet from my interview with Cory Doctorow. We started talking about the Privacy Right of Action in CIPA which pivoted into a discussion around data collection more generally. Full interview is here - tinyurl.com/3na5cb92 and pls follow @monopolyreport.bsky.social podcast for more

Thought I'd tease my interview with Cory Doctorow that will come out tomorrow on TMR podcast. We talk about his book Enshittification (which you should DEF buy). This segment is a charming back and forth regarding dark patterns used in the ad space.

@patrickmcgee.bsky.social shares a bit about his process for writing "Apple in China". There's a lesson for us regulatory folks as we try to share BIG ideas in a way that is digestible.

There's also lots of stuff about his fascinating book & Apple's stance on privacy and competition.

On this week's @monopolyreport.bsky.social pod, we continue my discussion with former Chair of the FTC, Jon Leibowitz.

In this clip, we talk about where to set the bar in terms of privacy rules - where we make the point that having FEW rules or TOO STRINGENT rules tends to favor big tech.

I asked former FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz about how the Commission viewed Google's acquisition of DoubleClick back in 2008 - what he shared was eye opening to say the least!

How do we fix digital media in the EU? In my view, the answer to that question should include experimentation. I was honored to have a thoughtful discussion with @tobiasjudin.bsky.social of Norway's data protection regulator (the Datatilsynet). Norway is considering a ban on behavioral ads.

Justin Evans is a data optimist. His new book - The Little Book of Data - offers countless examples of how data solves problems & makes the world a better place. Naturally, I wanted to have him on TMR pod to see if I could pour a bit of cold water. (:
