As for why Gipson. Beal has been with the team for a few seasons so they know what he brings and they’ve invested development in him. Gipson has been a journeyman new to the team just this season.

I’m not sure about the 4 slots you are referring to. My guess is Beal is insurance in case Gipson bails for another team. The LB they signed is probably just a placeholder. If Gipson clears waivers, I think that LB gets released right away.

Because he’s already on the active 53 man roster. He’s not a practice squad guy.

Yes that is correct. Releasing Gipson means he can sign elsewhere. Considering the Niners are desperate for defensive line depth, he’s better off coming back to the practice squad because he’s likely to get elevated to the active roster week to week again.

Martin got a bunch of snaps on special teams vs Atlanta. The only way Martin gets time at LB is if Bethune/Winters gets hurt.
Gipson was elevated from practice squad to the 53 man roster three times already which is the max allowed. Releasing him lets them re-sign to the practice squad again.
