Ahh, gotcha. I was just thinking within the specific context of the article. But yes, in an ecological sense you are 100% correct. Fair point.

Perhaps, instead of connection to nature, what you are looking for is “time spent in nature”? As in not inside, in offices, in front of screens, etc.

Alternatively, what else do you suggest? Sit on our hands, do nothing, and give up? Is it not better to still try to educate people, in the hopes that even a few are willing to listen? It isn’t enough to say it isn’t working because some don’t want to listen. Alternative action must be presented.

This negatively impacts those who have chosen to follow the protocols as well as they don’t make you completely immune (just like how you can still get the flu with the flu shot, but are less likely to or less likely to have deadly consequences if most people are vaccinated, etc.

The issue is, if they don’t to vax themselves that would be one thing, but doing so puts everyone else at risk due to herd immunity. As we found out during Covid, if a large number of people don’t follow protocols to prevent the spread of disease, we see increased cases of these diseases.

We can break this cycle. It takes time. And progress isn’t linear. I know it is exhausting. Trust me, I’m tired too. But I sincerely believe that we can and will be better, and just takes time and mistakes to get there. We just have to keep learning, stay vigilant, and work on a better way forward.

For most of human history we have been in survival mode. Acting without understanding why. Playing out the same negative patterns. But we have learned more in the last 30-50 years about how our brains work, and why. And with that we can unlearn these negative patterns and build better neuropathways.

I would yes, history has been cyclical. But there is continued progress. Times like these are discouraging when tyranny causes setbacks. But we aren’t starting from scratch. We are starting from our previous progress. And with that we can do better for tomorrow.

They knew because history repeats itself. And that is why they wrote as a warning to ward against the cycle continuing in the future. They knew if we are aware of these patterns and remain vigilant, we can try to stop it. But ignorance and complacency allows tyrants to rise unchallenged.

Extinction burst- “temporary increase in a negative behavior that occurs when reinforcement is no longer provided. It can be a sign intervention is working”. And related social attitudes pendulum theory- how social attitudes and policies shift between extremes over time.

Long story short, unemployment data is not enough. Neither is the excuse of “oh well you took out the debt, so you deserve to be in crushing poverty). If our companies and country benefit from our skills and education, they should be compensating us fairly… in wages, and loan forgiveness. Period.
