I've been thinking about how someone recently said that the "modern heir" to these design qualities of the first Metroids is Rain World. There really is a looseness to that game and how it approaches its map (your creature can only remember recent areas) that I appreciate so much.

I really like how Rain World deals with exploration. It granted me a kind of "absolution" coming from the way 2D exploration is usually done: my primal concern is survival, its impossible to fill the map and find every nook and cranny. And the game offers so many rewarding moments by just explorin
