Once Christians tie their faith to partisan politics they eventually have to defend the indefensible.

Pledge all your allegiance to Jesus Christ and let the politicians fend for themselves.

I used to be sympathetic to the “man of his times” explanation for those who defended chattel slavery.

And then I found myself living among men of my times who ignore, minimize, dismiss, excuse, and cover up for sexual abusers.

In both times those who speak truth are ignored.

The test of the prophet is not found in the prophet’s words. It is found in the prophet’s life. A superb and brilliant preacher, theologically orthodox, who bullies, is rude, and dismissive is leaking fruit. Jesus says to beware of such people.

We must never assume that someone who is gifted verbally and has theological knowledge is spiritually wise and mature. Sometimes that leader is power-hungry and self-serving, exploiting the system and its people to feed themselves.

He has no desire to punish them. They have already been punished excessively by their own... waywardness.

The Father wants simply to let them know that the love they have searched for in such distorted ways has been, is, and always will be there for them.

We do not protect the God of truth by covering up sin and/or a crime within our institutions. To do so is to ‘protect’ a cancer—and cancer kills. We honor God by caring for the wounded and by dragging sin to the light and calling it by its right name.

Paul warns us not to participate in the deeds of darkness but instead to expose them (Ephesians 5:11). Understand that you cannot singlehandedly change an entire system; you are not called to do so. Yet we are to speak truth about our systems.

Why does Bluesky think I’m super into cats and wolves? I mean, I have nothing against cats or wolves. I may have even “liked” a cat or wolf post here and there. It’s just A LOT of cats and wolves is all I’m saying.

False prophets critique THEM.
True prophets critique US, that is, their own people.

In this regard false prophets are far more popular than true prophets.

I think we should stop referring to our interpretations of the Bible as “biblical.” There is a great difference between what the Bible itself says, and what we think it means.

My favorite version of myself is the “me” who shows up after a big screw up. I wish I could bottle the humility and tender spirit that follow - without first having to painfully face plant. Still, I’m thankful.

I’ve been a preacher for 26 years. Sunday was the first time someone ever shouted “heretic!” during a sermon.

Surprisingly it had nothing to do with my unwavering support for my Mets and Jets.

I wrote about this moment and the exchange that followed after the service.
