The idea that telecom Vodacom DRC gained loans from Kabila linked BGFI Bank despite being in deficit for several years is astounding. The documents provided to Open Secrets by PLAAN for our investigation into telco's business conduct, show how endemic corruption plays a role in internet shutdowns.
1/#DRC: With docs provided by @pplaaf.bsky.social, a new @opensecrets.org.za report finds a web of connections between former President Joseph Kabila and one of DRC's biggest telecoms providers-Vodacom Congo-marked by internet shutdowns at Kabila's instruction. #CongoHoldUp #ShutdownsEverywhereYouGo

In their 2024 report on tax justice, @taxjusticenet.bsky.social noted that countries are losing US$492 billion in tax a year due multinational corporations and wealthy individuals using tax havens to underpay tax. Case studies like MTN show why its so difficult to hold this conduct to account!
#ShutdownsEverywhereYouGo, a new investigative report by Open Secrets, reveals how MTN has helped silence dissent, evade taxes, and enable authoritarian regimes—all while operating with impunity.

My SONA Break Down:

1. The SRD grant will be used to introduce a Basic Income grant but unlike other measures in the speech, no figures were mentioned. National Treasury in the budget speech better stick to what is constitutional commitments and a proper livable income.

Fun fact for South Africans on World #DataProtection Day:
In November 2024 president Cyril Ramaphosa asked the National Assembly to re-consider portions of the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Amendment (RICA) Bill.
Today, 28 January, marks World #DataProtection Day.
According to dataprotection.africa, at least 36 African states have enacted data protection laws - but with artificial intelligence on the rise, only 25 of these laws appear to apply fully to AI-driven data processing. (1/3)

An massive victory in the fight towards making South Africa's social grants system fairer and more accessible to all. Amazing work by PayTheGrants and IEJ! www.ewn.co.za/2025/01/23/c...
Court rules SASSA's 2023 regulations limiting access to SRD grant unconstitutional & invalid
The court found invalid, among other things, the requirement for grant recipients to apply online only; the strict definitions of 'income' and 'financial support'.
