As Koffka points out, mere recourse to experience is insufficient to explain the solution of complex problems.!2 This sentiment is echoed by Maier and Wertheimer. 13;14 Wertheimer in particular maintains that "in full insight the different traits of the situation that determine its relevant features and thereby the solution, form themselves (into) a coherent system ..." The emphasis here is upon the disciplined analysis of the present reality data and its intrinsic relationships rather than upon the similarity of the situation to something encountered in the past. Koffka pursues the point when he insists that the mere existence of knowledge per se is not sufficient for its utilization, but the use of knowledge often becomes possible only after the components of the situation have been reorganized. Again, we return to the main issue, the effective utilization of our minds. Problem solving by similarity; searching our past for solutions to current situations has been declared by great mind after great mind to be an extremely limited technique, barely bordering upon conscious rational thought. But what are the alternatives? We'll look at several in the following chapters. For now, it is important to understand that if we are to be able to use our minds more efficiently and creatively we must become more aware of what we are doing mentally; what processes we are using. Becoming more sensitive to the structures inherent in the situations confronting us (components and their relationships one to another) and the nature of the analytical tasks demanded by the relationships between the components is a powerful step in the right direction.
