Movies are keeping me sane.

Was it good? No. Did I relate to Michelle Pfeiffer’s character (along with every woman who’s ever hosted during the hilidays)? Huh, yeah. And for that, I liked it.
Watching the movie Oh. What. Fun. as a form of personal torture. To take this many talented actors and to make a movie this bad is basically a crime.

Why does @simonmayo.bsky.social keep saying that Apple TV+ is now just Apple TV? It’s not. These are two separate services. Confusing? Yes. But both are still there.

About to board a plane so more to come but in the meantime:
- Alex Garland does war again, and it’s not fun.
- Pamela Anderson impresses but it’s so sad
- A classic rewatch with Child 1 and it’s still sooo good
- An ok-ish adaptation of a fun book

Catching up with @kermodeandmayo.bsky.social and I’m sorry but I need to say it: Dexter Fletcher’s Ghosted was awful. Yikes.

An average (if solid-ish week) culminating in brilliance with I’m Still Here - probably the best film of the Best Pictures nominees this year. Absolutely loved it. #FilmSky

A super hero movie that manages to be an allegory for depression, but also fun and entertaining. And the best MCU entry in a while (certainly of Phase 5). Pugh carries most of the emotional load but is also a great duo with David Harbour who gets most of the laughs. Bring on Phase 6! #FilmSky

What a joy to rewatch this masterpiece at the Stanford Theater downtown Palo Alto tonight with a full, engaged and responsive audience - and a live organist playing the movie’s score before the film and during intermission. I had forgotten how great, delightful and funny this movie was! #FilmSky

I’m a big Almodovar fan and this didn’t work for me. His first English language movie lacks cohesion and emotion and is plagued by woody dialogue and borderline bad performances. And those are great actors!!! What on Earth happened, Pablo? #FilmSky

Based on a play and it shows, as it feels very theatrical. It’s kind of ok as it’s pretty much a farce but the young leads were unfortunately underwhelming and without the serious talent on display by the rest of the cast, this would have been a bit of a disaster. A bit meh overall. #FilmSky

Enjoyed the 20th anniversary re-release in the cinema. My favorite Joe Wright film and my favorite P&P adaptation. Perfect from beginning to end - aside from that weird unnecessary ending that apparently was stuck on for the US release for no good reason. #FilmSky

A love letter to Black culture and Black music, this also and insanely works as a horror movie (although it’s not its main purpose). Deep and thoughtful, but also bold and gory, gorgeously shot and sewn together by a fabulous score and soundtrack. DO NOT miss. #FilmSky

I couldn’t really decide if this was a satire or just an old man whining against changing times. But in the end, Denys Arcand still does the human part really well and it’s where the film shines, beyond its slightly heavy-handed social commentary.

Multilingual but set in Paris, directed by Marjane Satrapi, this is a little all over the place and struggled to find a cohesive tone but has a couple of funny (if dark) moments, a few moving ones too, and some endearing characters.

Pointless remake of Jan de Bont’s 90s action film, with slightly more polished SFX, sexier scientists, a cruel lack of flying cows, and no sign of Helen Hunt - even in the role of the mom that was clearly written for her. Not awful, but very forgettable. #FilmSky

Extremely well-written and thought of, this keeps the tension on during the whole film. Leonie Benesch is in every scene, almost in every shot, and carries the whole film with grace and passion, even when she stumbles and doubts.
A great film, not to be missed. #FilmSky

Eighties vibes, Tarantinoesque storytelling, lots of gratuitous violence and a very clear anti-nazi message. A true love letter to Oakland!
Also, Tom Hanks in one of the best cameos ever. Loved every minute of it.

I missed this one when the season was originally released and I'm not sure why because it was a cracking little episode, dark and funny, with a gallery of vile but also relatable characters. Not a huge fan of the ending, but a minor criticism really. Can't wait for season 7 tomorrow!

How can it still be 43%???
An Economist-YouGov poll conducted Saturday through Tuesday found President Trump’s overall approval rating ticked down to 43 percent from 46 percent last week and 48 percent two weeks ago.

The new rating is Trump’s lowest mark in the weekly survey since starting his second term. wapo.st/3XSseAE

Sharing this in case you need a break from watching the global economy crash and burn for no good reason.
Tangy and salty and colorful, the scuttlebutt sandwich vibrates with flavor: hard-boiled egg, pickled beets and carrots, olives, capers, herbs and feta mingle on pillowy focaccia. nyti.ms/3YgFDm6

Reminds me of those interviews of Saddam’s information minister explaining “Everything is fine! there are no Americans in Baghdad!” while the US troops were rolling in in the next shot. 🤦🏻‍♀️
Now that’s a screenshot.
