Coming up to mother's day, I've been thinking a lot about parenting and the intersections with my work.
So, here are five ways for kids to learn to love data (with book recs, activities, and even a show!) that we've used with our littles. #dataviz

@frank.computer's "Minimalism and the Absurdity of the Data-to-Ink Ratio" will make you chuckle if you're a #dataviz designer, but also challenges us in a good way: how has minimalism become a way for some “intellectuals” in our field to enforce aesthetics as law?

The 'before April 2' feels really important here. People can celebrate the reductions for most countries all they want, but we're still charging higher tariffs than we have in over a decade and US consumers can still expect price escalations.

It's election day here in Wisconsin! Vote Crawford, and prove that Musk cannot buy a seat on our Supreme Court and continue to support CHOICE here in Wisco.

Aggregating the individual columnist positions.
This is a sample size of ten specific people. The charts in the article that plot their position and work are a visual explainer of perspectives and keep each issue area siloed.
Who sees DOGE as positive? The invited conservatives, no surprise. 2/4

I had the same question - what does the chart with the points for each person look like to see the divergence by issue? Thoss at least pin data points to individuals, not plotting aggregate values.
The headshots in those charts also add demographic details about who holds what perspectives.

Thanks for flagging! I keep seeing the headline chart going around. Adding the link & example for non NYT subscribers.
The invited conservatives having most of the positive sentiment comes across in the disaggregated ones. Agreed on the 'don't cover it up' sentiment

For a glimmer of optimism, I want to think that in a world where:
- the tools we use to create #dataviz are more accessible
- we engage with data more in our daily lives
- creative and community forms are more celebrated
...there is opportunity.

Be still my #dataviz heart. One of the most (professionally) delightful things about having a kid in elementary school is seeing how they're learning how to read charts!

My husband, not ironically: "I'm curious what you think about the minimalist score card design they're using."
He's not a designer (he's an economist), making this an especially delightful question.
So why don't I like these BANs?

It's only Day 14.
And I know many of my public health and USAID colleagues are still reeling from the changes this past week.
I hope you find a moment to rest and enjoy something simple and beautiful today, like a sunrise or some fresh air.
It helps me refocus on the fight still ahead.
