🚨 New paper landing soon.
An invited review for Cambridge Prisms: Drylands (www.cambridge.org/core/journal...) about #Quaternary #dryland dynamics. Some areas of emerging consensus, plus remaining contradictions. A short review (<5,000 words): selective not exhaustive

I’ll be talking dynamic landscapes in this afternoon’s Research Storytelling event the School of Environment Education & Development…
Or is that ‘dynamic research teams’?!

With thanks to Team NS 90 degrees for the aerial photo & to Dom Stratford for demonstrating the power of the wind in photo 2

Results just in…
The Formby sand glows a bit… Did you spot the 1980s crisp packet in the photos in post above? (We know some of the landscape is quite young)

And Ben’s bleaching my experiment depleted the 45,000 year old Kalahari dune sample by about half…

#Dryland environments BSc students here in the Geography Department at University of Manchester sampled some beach dunes (dryland analogue) earlier this semester, and today made these sands glow in the dark to start to explore how long the sand might have been buried in the dune… #luminescencedating

A frosty start, heading to talk about warmer places in Oxford Geography’s Landscape Dynamics Seminar Series

We’re starting to explore hominin routes into vleis (or pans) in the Namib Sand Sea

Looking forward to catch ups & some trips down DPhil memory lane…

Some glowing sand to start 2024, we ask:
Can low-fi POSL-based age estimates help us increase spatial coverage & improve spatial + vertical sampling resolution for reconstructing dune dynamics?
