Super what now?

I was practicing sketching poses last week when I saw this photo of @ladyalis.bsky.social. I was inspired by how she seemed both tough and vulnerable, and fortunately she agreed when I asked if I could use it as a reference for a finished piece!

I'm really struggling with art right now, so I thought I'd try this to remind myself that, with every piece I work on, I fall out of love with something once the sketching is done and actively hate it right up until the finalized render.

Rough concept sketch that I made in early February 2024. I wanted to do something for Nico Robin's birthday. I immediately thought of her using her powers on crew in a sexual way. Then I thought about when that could have happened in the story and thought of post-Enies Lobby, giving the guys a handjob in affection and appreciation. I'm not sure of the exact train of thought, but the reversal of the power dynamic between one woman and five guys made me think that it would be funny to flip the Piper Perri Surrounded meme around, hence the layout. I had the basic ideas for the character interactions: Franky doing his superrr pose, Sanji swooning, Luffy leaping with his pants off, Zoro being stoic and trying not to react, and Usopp being angry that she's grabbing his nose instead. But it was way too rough, the perspective felt boring, and I only had a few days before Robin's birthday. Knowing how slow I go with everything I decided to shelve it for the future. Sketch of nsfw One Piece fan art featuring Nico Robin. Full description in the quoted image. When I picked it up again in January of 2025 I decided to put a year of experience into practice. I wanted to shift the perspective a bit, align Robin with the right third line (which also had the benefit of showing more of her legs). I flipped the Strawhats around because there was more room on the left of the image now for Franky, and Usopp could kind of hunch forward as he reacted. I sketched each of the Strawhats independently, mostly in different colors, so I could figure out the layout and not lose them as they overlapped. Zoro looks all wonky because originally I had him in the far background, but in the final composition I moved him right behind Robin's shoulder, resulting in some distortion as I flipped him and skewed him to get the rough perspective right. Nami and Chopper were late additions, because I originally wanted to follow the original Piper Perri surrounded meme exactly. But the couch felt really empty and there were only (at the time) two crew members not present, so I figured out gags for them so they could fit onto the couch without dramatically changing the layout. Chopper especially worked out because the back of the couch was too low for the convenient censoring I wanted for Franky and Sanji. Linework is especially rough for motivation. The piece loses the energy, detail and volume hints from the sketch and won't regain those qualities until rendering. I've begun to settle in on an ink brush because of how clean and smooth the taper is. I go in with black ink and then lock the alpha channel and paint over it using a custom water color brush (which I continue to tweak during rendering). I don't spend a ton of time on flats. Usually I grab an average color from reference images with the eyedropper and then tweak the values until it looks right enough. Most of the work happens in the next phase, but since bsky only allows four images at a time I'll detail that here (but it applies to the final render in the quoted post). My first step is to add a shadow layer and fill the entire thing using something in the purple range (depending on color and mood, it varies, as does the opacity and blending mode, but usually it's sub 50% and either multiply or linear dodge). I add a masking layer to that and then using a custom water color brush I "paint" the masking layer using the transparent color swatch, effectively roughly carving where the light would be and leaving the shadows. At some point I then go in and add an ambient occlusion layer in another shade of purple, usually darker and more desaturated. This one I paint the AO shadows directly with the custom brush. Lastly I add a highlight layer using a similar process. I then go in and tweak and blend and touch up each of those layers until I'm happy with the render. For the final touches I grabbed a sakura brush from the asset store and scattered those across different planes in the foreground, midground, bg, blurring as needed. And then I found some references for the windows in Water 7, laid them out flat with a ruler, then stretched and skewed them into the right perspective and redrew them. I painted them in with another water color brush, then tweaked all the colors until I was happy with the result.
