An Aussie trying to convince our politicians to model a simpler & more effective tax for Australia invented by a mining engineer & two chartered accountants back in the 80s after hearing about the National Party's 15% flat tax idea. #abtax

David, being a tax lawyer you might be able to understand how #abtax works to pay off Australia's debt, create full employment, start to solve climate change, tax the cash economy and reduce red tape #auspol

As I understand it, the $8.7 trillion figure is for business as usual, i.e., building coal & gas-fired power stations, new power lines, etc., to serve our increasing population and maintain our existing power network until 2050. The $300 billion extra is for renewables to achieve net zero.

Hi @bsky.app

If you want this to be a global platform, how about trending topics reflecting the other 96% of the world's population?

The domination of this site by American news and American topics is one of its greatest drawbacks

Hell, even old Elon manages to get this right

And the misinformation, apparently
@chrisbowenmp.bsky.social is paying $2 billion to send 500 government staff.

Most likely, 400 are Australian fossil fuel lobbyists, 90 are environmentalists, & 10 are from the government.

As @timinclimate.bsky.social says, unbelievable

4BC is out here with the hard-hitting investigations!

500 Australians are apparently at the UN climate summit in Brazil, and that's costing taxpayers $2 billion!

So for some quick maths that's $4 million per person for a two week trip to Brazil.

Unbelievable stuff! 😛

@richarddenniss.bsky.social said that in 2023-24 4GWh of curtailed power. Off-peak hot water heaters in the middle of the night use about the same. A simple programming change could have all hot water heaters turn on in the middle of the day saving us $6b by 2040

Will it be staggered over a eight-hour period, one retailer can be 10-1pm another 11-2pm, so everyone is not turning their appliances on at the same time putting pressure on the local poles & wires

Additionally, I need to train my dog to turn on the dishwasher & washing machine during the day. 🐶🐾

@chrisbowenmp.bsky.social

Excellent idea.

Have you also considered asking the network operators to move their off-peak hot water network to the middle of the day?

Back in the 1950's coal power station operators had excess power in the middle of the night so they came up with the idea. #auspol

Prices will not go down as much due to 'gold plating' of the network, thanks to Howard, which is still happening. Excellent essay by Jess Hill at @themonthly.com.au www.themonthly.com.au/july-2014/es...

I remember watching that #npc address when David Suzuki ordered salmon for the entire audience. He timed his speech so that when they served the salmon, he started speaking about how they feed the salmon dye so that they turn a certain colour. The camera panned around to a journalist stuffing.. 1/2

100% agree, maybe start off with, you can only claim negative gearing, utilities & maintenance for the time it is rented each year. So if you AirBnb for 120 nights a year you can only claim a 1/3 #auspol

I would suggest that #abtax is more progressive than our current tax system, because I know that if you get paid twice as much as I do, you will pay twice as much tax, and you will not be able to get a juicy tax refund at the end of the year when you put in your tax return. 5/5 #abtax #auspol

My former very wealthy boss joked that he only paid 30 cents in tax. I said 30 cents to the dollar, but he insisted it was just 30 cents. Under our current system, as Kerry Packer famously said to the Senate, ‘that anyone who pays more tax than they can get away with needs their head examined’ 4/

We could also have a 2% wealth tax like @garyseconomics.bsky.social
Currently, the rich are trying to reduce their taxable income to zero and have trust funds to squirrel away their billions. #abtax will virtually eliminate trust funds, as there will be no tax advantage to having a trust fund. 3/
