Leading care, work and family policy at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Previously Citizens Advice & Trussell Trust. Views always my own.
Helsinki’s public library is an absolute marvel.

Visited this weekend and it was genuinely moving to see a community asset be this beautiful, functional, and multi-generational. Look at those windows!

We called our (female) friend Gary, and then Gaz, for *years* because a stranger once got her name wrong.

A lot of cultures are hilarious (eg North Indians) and the UK is absolutely up there. Love this from @sofiejenkinson.bsky.social

Stark numbers out today from ONS on loss of earnings and reduction in work amongst mothers *years* after childbirth.

Like our own @jrf-uk.bsky.social research, shows that caring requirements have a long tail of financial impact. Makes the success of the govt's childcare reform even more vital.

NEW analysis from me & @datataha.bsky.social showing a 'care expectation gap' on the front page of the @yorkshirepost.co.uk today

Only 1 in 5 know the real cost of home care & most underestimate their own likelihood of caring

With no plans to fix the system the gap will widen - govt needs to act

The UK's paternity leave offer is pitiful and low income dads are locked out of enhanced support because their employers don't offer it or they're not entitled.

Self employed dads fare worst.

Heart full to be at the launch of @carefull.bsky.social with kindred souls to think about care and a better future.

Frustrating that actual measures to support people into work haven't been included in the sums to assess the labour market impact of govt's welfare reform package.

Which effectively means only cutting people's benefits has been deemed a good policy to get people into work...

It’s very very sad after a summer of murderous riots against brown and black people that a national politician feels confident to say this on TV.

It’s also sad how normal it feels (and how routine & unquestioning write-ups of it are) - this is from today’s Playbook.

A personal post I wouldn't have put on The Other Place but feel moved to make. My grandmother Trichur Rukmani (94!) passed away this morning.

She was gorgeous, a trailblazing Sanskrit professor & real matriarch. I only found out today she has a Wiki page. I can't believe I'll never see her again.

The more care you do the less you can work - hence a 'caring penalty' where the act of caring makes you poorer.

No wonder that carers with higher intensities of care are less likely to be happy with their income. (2/3)

Some cool (/depressing) new stats from the ONS about sandwich carers: people who care for both children and adults.

Looking at caring intensity, as with other types of carers the more care you do the worse off you tend to be financially. (1/3)

In other news, turns out the last govt's tweak to try to boost takeup of Universal Credit childcare help has been functionally useless.

Before families had to pay upfront & claim back, but people in poverty often don't have the funds. Why is this system SO much more complex than 'funded hours'!
