My humble opinion is that balmorals (especially brown) are not “too-formal” as long as it’s with dress pants (i.e. creases) as they are here. The tie on the other hand is a wasted opportunity and the pants too-slim (cuffs would help too).

If it's okay to restrict within visible area, I would start by defining a/the most-connected hex/hepta-tile in the given pattern and filtering - not especially elegant, but I think this is more easily tractable than evaluating all possible "roles" from a single tile and then moving.
