USDA has a history of not enforcing the AWA. With recent cuts on staff & resources, the situation will get worse. Animals will suffer. Eric Kleiman, AAVS's Senior Policy Adviser stated "What we’re seeing now is a turbocharging of trends we’ve been seeing for decades.”

Chimp Haven is celebrating 30 years of sanctuary for chimps retired from NIH research. Watch their video about Rita and Teresa, the first chimps to arrive at the sanctuary. AAVS is grateful to play a small role in helping with grants through our Sanctuary Fund.

The GAO released a report focused on organ-on-a-chip tech that uses human cells to simulate organ function and are more relevant than animal tests. Challenges that need to be addressed to advance OOCs, including limited access to high-quality human cells. www.gao.gov/products/gao...

Farmed animals are are used in invasive research that causes immense suffering. In 2023, 51,800 pigs were used in research, 71% in experiments causing pain & 11,500 sheep were used, with over 51% being used in procedures causing pain. #WorldDayForAnimalsInLabs #animaltesting #humanescience

World Day for Animals in Labs is tomorrow! Over 125,000 rabbits were used in labs in 2023 for chemical testing, models of disease, and to produce polyclonal antibodies. Rabbits are companion animals, not lab tools!

We love #beagles because they're friendly & docile, which is also why they're used in experiments. Over 47,200 dogs suffered in labs in 2023 to study heart & lung disease, cancer, and orthopedics, as well as in toxicity testing. www.aavs.org/dogs. #WorldDayForAnimalsInLabs #beagles #animaltesting
