Neither did Starship, it was literally over a large body of water. And wow, good thing iron and titanium are the fourth and ninth most abundant elements in the Earth’s crust! 😃 What didn’t burn up might even form an artificial reef! 🤩

Also fuck Elon Musk, but he’s really just an asshole figurehead. I have mad respect for the engineers at Space-X who put up with his bullshit in order to advance space flight.

Again it did something that completely resolved after 30 minutes. Why should I care about that, in the grand scheme of *gestures broadly*?

But 85% of Starlink’s customer base are in rural areas, so that literally is the need they’re serving in order to make money. If you’re in an urban environment you’d use a cheaper land-based service with infinitely better latency.

lol ok go off then I guess 🤷‍♂️

From a non-paywalled reporting on the matter, “Multiple satellites and international ground-based stations observed the disturbance, which lasted for 30 to 40 minutes before the affected part of the ionosphere fully recovered.”

Ok and…?

You also say “siphon off public wealth” as if that isn’t like, the entire M.O. of capitalism writ large. Don’t hate the player, hate the game. At least there are practical applications for what Space-X is doing (have you used Starlink? It’s pretty nice).
March 7, 2025 at 10:21 PM
Ha, no, just a practical realist. I know complaining on here about Space-X isn’t going to move the needle, and if they receive 6% of a single year’s defense budget to develop Starship, I’ll take it over another goddamn aircraft carrier or boondoggle of a next-gen fighter project.
March 7, 2025 at 10:20 PM
They also lost it at the very end of the burn so there wasn’t much methane left.

If you’re concerned about methane, do you eat beef?
March 7, 2025 at 9:54 PM
Do I sound like a moron? (You must take me for one). I said it dissipates in response to the comment that the loss of Starship caused fuel to “rain down” (it didn’t). Yes it’s a terrible greenhouse gas, but it was only released as a result of a failure, otherwise it reacts to become CO2 and water.
March 7, 2025 at 9:54 PM
Yeah and that’s used by their Draco and Super Draco thrusters, which aren’t in Starship, what’s your point?
March 7, 2025 at 9:50 PM
So bringing internet access to remote communities is a pointless vanity project? How about mining precious materials on the moon? And really, what Sci-Fi nerd doesn’t want to see humanity become space-faring?
March 7, 2025 at 8:12 PM
Many of us already realize that. Do you think we’ll shut down commercial aviation when climate change gets worse, though? Because space flight still only accounts for 1-2% of all aviation emissions. Fat chance, I say. There are bigger factors to focus your ire on than rockets, is all I’m saying.
March 7, 2025 at 8:05 PM
100% agree, but sadly the fucker is rich, and laissez-faire capitalism says he gets to do (almost) whatever he wants with it. If the asshat wants to go to Mars, I’d rather those investments happen here than in Kazakstan, PRC, etc. The gov’t contracts bother me, but is Boeing’s bloat better?
March 7, 2025 at 7:39 PM
I disapprove of Elon as much as the next guy, but failures are, perhaps, inevitable when pushing engineering boundaries. We lost our four Pioneer rockets in the race to the moon. FWIW steel, aluminum and titanium aren’t toxic pollutants, and the fuel is methane and LOx, so that just dissipates.

Jamiroquai is great skiing jams (and that’s a good mix!) 💯
