History student, percussionist, loves video games (esp. RPGs and platformers), and music connoisseur. Bigots get banned! I consider myself a secular humanist.

I try to hear different styles. But I really like punk rock and J-fusion.

I heard T-Square's album "Paradise" from 2015. I'd say it brings in some new and old elements. It's not like "NEXT", but might be a mix of Adventures and Nine Stories, with a tiny bit of 33's pop tracks. It's a very good listen.

I heard Architects' album Daybreaker (2012). It's still metalcore, but less heavy and with a lot more progressive instrumentation. Sam Carter's clean vocals are much more present here than in the mid-2010s albums. Also there are more political and anti-religious themes in this record. Pretty cool.

I heard Glassjaw's album, "Worship and Tribute" (2002). It's called one of the all-time post-hardcore albums. It's definitely post-hardcore, but I can tell it's not anything like the scene (such as PTV or SWS). The album feels similar to They're Only Chasing Safety, occasionally with gnarly riffs.

Went to hear Evanescence's Fallen album (2003). It's a pretty excellent work of gothic metal, with plenty of good orchestral work, epic and/or meaty riffs and of course Amy Lee's vocals. The odd ball is Bring Me to Life, where Paul McCoy's rap vocals have increasingly stuck out like a sore thumb.

1. 33 by T-Square. Yes, it's their 33rd record. An awesome jazz fusion album with so much variety, nailing every genre it touches, from smooth jazz, disco, instrumental pop, straight up fusion, and hard rock.

2. Lost in the Sound of Separation (2008) by Underoath. Somehow even better than Define the Great Line. It's dark, but certainly way more abrasive, which really brings out the hardcore roots from metalcore. By not chasing the more metal-leaning trend for the genre, they made something really cool.

3. Mezmerize by System of a Down (2005). Based on relistens, this SOAD record is definitely my preferred one compared to the other 2005 record, Hypnotize. A cool mix of heavy metal with a bunch of other genres, with grooves, thrashy parts, polka breaks, and more.

4. All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us by Architects (2016). Somehow got even heavier than its predecessor record (gain, both in emotion and instrumental power). Tom Searle was nearing his end due to cancer, but it's like he only got stronger.

5. Lost Forever // Lost Together by Architects (2014). A very heavy record, both in sound & emotion. The late Tom Searle in his final years really popped off when he started taking even more of a role in the writing. Vocalist Sam Carter does super well too, both when scream-singing and "BLEGH"-ing.

6. Reanimation by Linkin Park. Not really a band record, but a Hybrid Theory remix project led by Mike Shinoda and Joe Hahn. It removes most of the rock, and really lets the atmospheric vibes, as well as the hip hop elements take center stage. Besides a few early tracks, the record is impeccable.

7. Ashes of the Wake by Lamb of God (2004). A perfect mix of brutal, heavy metal with a lot of protest lyrics. An amazing first impression for the band on me.

8. Define the Great Line by Underoath (2006). A step in a heavier direction for the previously melodic, emo band, they nailed the sound to a tea. Mix the heavier, darker sound with some post-metal, and you get a really good, unique record.

9. Dictator by Daron Malakian and Scars on Broadway. Out of all Daron's solo records, this one has the most power and anti-establishment energy that he's known for. With or without SOAD, he does super well by himself.

10. Groove Globe by T-Square (2004). A jazz fusion album with lots of fun grooves and additional synths alongside the Masahiro Andoh-Takeshi Itoh duo.

Finally heard some Asking Alexandria. I heard their first album, Stand Up and Scream (2009). Super good, from a pure musical perspective. It's like a mix of brutal Suicide Season metalcore with strong clean vocals and a little bit of techno elements. If only the lyrics didn't age like milk...

Heard Underoath's album "Ø (Disambiguation)" (2010). With Gillespie leaving, Spencer takes over all of the vocals. It seems the band decided on contrasting softer segments with heavy sections. I prefer LITSOS, but this is still a pretty good record in its own right.

I heard Architects' album Lost Forever // Lost Together (2014). Yet another peak metalcore album. This band is quickly getting up there regarding favorites, and I've only heard two albums.

I heard T-Square's album "Next" (2014). It's a pretty good one like usual, with a style I can't put my finger on. But as a whole, I'd say there's more international influences in the composition, and some theatrical drama in there as well. So it is pretty unique in that regard.

I heard Dead Sara's "Ain't It Tragic" album (2021). A very fun and feisty rock album. Definitely not that heavy, and has some blues and old-school pop influence. But very good.

Finally approaching the end of my Scars on Broadway journey. I finished off with their self-titled album (2008). Being fresh off Mezmerize/Hypnotize, Daron wanted a more distinct sound, so this one is more classic rock sounding, though it occasionally touches on the metal. Overall, a decent album.

Further going into other groups. Today, it was Deftones, again. I went for an earlier album, White Pony. Having heard their first single, I feel it preserves some of the metal edge of old Deftones, but it dives into the weird artsyness they are now known for. Chino has a very unique, haunting voice.

I went and heard an album from Architects: All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us (2016). The last one for the late Tom Searle; he definitely put his heart and soul into those guitars and lyrics. Sam Carter does really well at delivering the emotion the lyrics demand. Very heavy but also with atmosphere.

It's that time again. I heard T-Square's album, Smile (2013) with another Reunion band. No Izumi, but we get the old percussionist Semba. This one brings more jazz influence than pop, but still relatively laid back, with a few groovy tracks. Cool synths too. About the same level as Nine Stories IMO.

Heard the album Sacrament by Lamb of God (2006). Like Ashes of the Wake, it's a great package of heavy, groove metal goodness. Mark Morton and Randy Blythe show to be a potent duo once again. 8.5/10
