We also previously reported on Candi Miller, whose family said she didn't visit a doctor “due to the current legislation on pregnancies and abortions.”

Maternal health experts deemed her death preventable and blamed Georgia's abortion ban.

As an Indian, as someone who lived in Egypt, and who has, modestly, remained committed to my politics despite that, here are my rules for living under fascist regimes:
1) Focus on organizational structure. 1/

Fascists build alternative institutions to accommodate the frustrated ambitions of those who are or who feel sidelined by the status quo. Eventually they cannibalize existing institutions. Focus on pipelines that align the interests of the disenfranchised into fascist movements. 2/

2) ignore attention hogging nonsense and focus on step 1. Hegseth being named SecDef is much less important than the pipelines in the military bureaucracy which means there will be no institutional resistance to his directives.

3) Accept that corporatized media will only amplify attention-hogging nonsense and eventually become propaganda outlets. Tamil farmers protested for 2 yrs and not one major Indian outlet covered it. Being aware of resistance efforts is vital to supporting them and preventing demoralization.

4) Learn to live with social complexity. If you write off the possibility of persuading your fellow citizens, fascists win by default. In practice fascist ideologues are few, but people think they can ride that tiger for their own purpose. Read Sarah Ahmed’s organization of hate. Weaponize love.

5) Mock power. Fascists depend on the projection of invincible power. Take every opportunity to show the emperor has no clothes. Fascists depend on people craving proximity to power. Any sign of weakness is thus debilitating.

6) By the same token, stop fetishizing power. Normalize its refusal. Focusing breathlessly on the exercise of power by dimwitted fascists only helps their project of projecting power. Ignore it. Celebrate those who quit. Build them up.
