In the first novel I wrote there was a scene I loved that didn't quite fit. I was advised to cut it and agreed. But it kept nagging me. I spent a year going back and forth and finally realized that that scene was the thematic heart of the story, and ended up revising the rest of the book around it.

This is a gratifying read as I thought I was the only one who writes this way! I'll spend months writing notes & partial scenes before turning out 7-10k words a day in a binge until the 1st draft is done.
