Wow, had no idea chimeras went guitarfish-mode there for a bit. Props for really making these weirdos still feel lifelike!

For example the Morrison Formation is absolutely filled with large dinosaurs, and small ones are much harder to find. If taken at face value the ecosystem is absolutely bizarre, but when you factor in taphonomic bias it becomes clear that the small ones outnumbered the giants, but haven’t preserved

Overall though it’s very important to remember how fossils came to be and what could influence their likelihood of preserving when interpreting fossil data. A “rare” animal in the record could very well be a common sight in the actual formation, but some quirk of the record keeps it from showing up.

Though of course there will be many exceptions like the various Mongolian desert sites that with specimens preserved as they were in life via sand dunes and whatnot, and lake/lagoon deposits that preserve all those really nice birdy critters which afaik don’t involve a lot of movement. And traces.

Not a palaeontologist myself but but having talked with some its pretty on point for most body fossils. I’ve heard it described that basically when we look at a group of fossils in say, the hell creek formation, we aren’t looking at a full ecosystem, just whatever bits washed into a river bend.

Globidens was around iirc, Ptychodus too. Plenty of critters that would enjoy a nice chowder from time to time by my estimation at least. Unless they were mainly sticking to ammonites, need to freshen myself up a bit on the specifics lol

For sure, imagine the data that could be just waiting to be revealed! Having such a complete look at a pterosaur down to its colours and patterns is something I could only have dreamed of before. Seeing it in the little birdosaurs is amazing, but pterosaurs? That’s something we just don’t have now.

Makes sense, thanks for the reply! 🙏
Here’s to hoping someone can get a proper look at the critter sometime

What an amazing looking animal, fantastic composition! 😌

I’m curious though, I’ve seen others restore Pterorhynchus with a sort of fleshy dewlap in the past I imagine your reconstruction dosent have it because it’s likely a taphonomic artifact instead?
