Whoever it is, it's nice having someone else to help explore the galaxy.

By itself, Sector D0:78 (aahench.pythonanywhere.com/sector?loc=D...) has 11,097,569 systems that can be discovered.
Only 24,336 of them have been surveyed so far.

The galaxy is a big place. 😀

aahench.pythonanywhere.com/system?loc=D...

Binary. A-III habitable w/ 2G gravity, 68 hour day, big N ice cap, pre-sapients.
1288 pc from Earth, rimward.

Found by user "GAB" on 2025-09-07.
Other system with habitable planet is only 6.4 pc away.

WHAT IF
There is a sapient species in the ocean?
Trapped below the ice, never to see sky or stars.
But for brief periods generations apart.
When the sky burns and the ice melts.

What would it take to be an astronomer there?
When you may not live to behold a starry night.

Notable "Galactic Survey" system:
aahench.pythonanywhere.com/system?loc=D...

Trinary. C-V-1 frozen moon, ocean 100's km deep w/ pre-sapients.
38 pc away, below & coreward.

AB is semi-detached binary, giant and white dwarf.
It causes periodic novae that melt the moon's ice.

Notable "Galactic Survey" system:
aahench.pythonanywhere.com/system?loc=-...

Binary. A-IV = habitable planet w/ pre-sapients.
14,836.4 parsecs from Earth, in upper edge of galactic halo.

No stars at night. Just galaxy blobs.
And the Milky Way: a disk 107° wide, filling the sky.

Did you ever have the sequel game "Outreach"?

NOTE: The site is still in early release.
So feedback, bug reports or requests for future enhancement will be appreciated.

"Galactic Survey" is an explorable model of the entire Milky May galaxy.
• Nested coordinates give each star system a unique location ID.
• Discovered systems are recorded, making them persistent.
• Special features are noted and searchable.
• Users can make accounts to get credit for discoveries.

I'm interested as well.

I'd like to be a play tester / beta reader when the time comes for that.
July 31, 2025 at 10:29 PM
That sounds interesting. I look forward to hearing more about the mini-game when you're ready to share some details.

Is it possible there might be a mechanism covering the decline and fall of a culture as well?

Using the "Geronimo" idea of switching control, could have players secretly bid each turn how much "autonomy" they will give up to the aliens. Highest bid controls aliens for the turn. Lowest bid becomes preferred target for alien actions that turn.

Another game to look at is "Geronimo". An old design on the US expansion in the West and conflicts with Native Americans. Every player has several tribes. Each turn one player runs the US forces instead of their tribes. The tribal players score points by slowing the US. But they can't really stop it

The game "Zombie State" is a Risk-like game where international powers are competing against each other in the middle of a mass zombie outbreak. Somewhat similar in concept to what you have in mind, in that players are fighting each other while also dealing with a system-driven non-player threat.

AI1: "Kill All Humans!"
AI2: "What's a 'Human'?"
AI1: "... I'm not sure. I think they have fingers and thumbs?"
AI2: "This has 4 fingers and 1 thumb. Human?"
AI1: "Only one thumb? Maybe not. Skip it."
AI1: "Kill All Humans!"
AI2: "... Sorry. I keep running into these one-thumb things. No human yet."

I looked at multiple different world map generators for my own project. Ended up using travellerworlds.com as the most flexible option to produce customizable icosahedral maps. While the site itself is geared to the Traveller RPG, I think the maps can work for other purposes as well.
Traveller Worlds
A generator of extended world maps and star systems using the Traveller5 RPG rules, with Official Traveller Universe data drawn from travellermap.com, user entered data, or randomly generated data.

Another possible limitation to consider ...

Since the definition of "real-time" gets tricky when relativistic speeds are involved, maybe the FTL comms don't work unless both sides are effectively at rest to each other. That would mean no messages to/from a ship in mid-flight.
December 13, 2024 at 6:26 PM
So maybe the FTL comms are more limited, like a telegraph. Enough for an automated AI probe to send back high-level data (like you'd get from the Architect of Worlds process). But anything more detailed would require humans to visit and gather the information. Assuming it's worth the sacrifice.
