a short story about Ferdinand's hands and Hubert's special brand of concern
Hubert sits by his desk and waits. He expects Ferdinand's arrival to be loud and dramatic. "Hubert! Explain yourself!", he's likely to shout, throwing the door open with a thud. Instead Ferdinand slips into the office after a polite knock. "Hubert, there seems to be a mistake." "Is that so?" Hubert asks, slim brow rising but a fraction. "Yes, it appears my battalion is excluded from the next battle." How he tries to appear calm and assertive, arms crossed over his puffed-out chest. A valiant effort, if not for the indignation burning in his eyes. Hubert meets his gaze and holds it for a moment before speaking. "A real mistake would be sending you out with them". Before Ferdinand can interject to defend the honor of his men, Hubert continues. "I will not be putting a whole group at risk because their superior is incapacitated." "How-" Ferdinand blurts out before remembering himself. "I... I have no idea what you're talking about." Hubert keeps his steady gaze on him while Ferdinand's eyes dart somewhere else. "I can give credit where it's due - you did a remarkable job hiding it from everyone else." Hubert had to learn many skills in his life - careful observation just another one of them. When you grow up knowing the enemy can hide in any corner wearing any face, you train yourself to notice things, and to decide which of them spell trouble. Ferdinand wants to keep fighting him, it's clear on his face, but he knows when he's in a losing position - his shoulders sag as he exhales forcefully. Still, he tries again, eyes sharp with resolve. "It is not in my nature to hide anything - especially if it would be of actual consequence," he says, stressing last two words. "We'll see about that. May I?" Hubert reaches out while giving Ferdinand an expectant look. Ferdinand works his jaw for a moment, but ultimately relents, uncrossing his arms and dropping onto a seat across from Hubert. After another pause, he offers his right hand and Hubert takes it gingerly. He peels off the glove and studies Ferdinand's hand, stroking over little cuts and faded scars. There it is - the slightest tremor, muscle spasms barely discernible under his fingers. Ferdinand stays stubbornly silent as Hubert continues, motions unhurried but unwavering. "How long?" He asks quietly as he unbuttons the cuff and pulls the sleeve up, thumbs digging into the flesh over the wrist to find the muscles there knotted and stiff. Ferdinand bites his lower lip - contemplation or pain, it's hard to say. "I assure you, it is nothing to worry about..." He loses the rest of the sentence in a sharp hiss when Hubert repeats the motion, with more force this time. Ferdinand shoots him a look before casting his eyes at a wall instead. "If you must know, two weeks. I can still work perfectly fine, so if you could just..." "You must rest." Ferdinand doesn't hold back a bitter laugh. "You are one to talk." At Hubert's unamused silence, he gathers himself again. "I promised to see this war through, and I intend to keep my word." "It will only get worse if you leave this like that." Hubert's voice is quiet but there is steel in it. Ferdinand, as always, refuses to back down. "This is nothing. I have a duty I must attend to, so just let me..." "And my duty is making sure our army suffers as little casualties as possible," Hubert cuts in, a sudden edge to his voice. "I will not send you out there just for you to die." Ferdinand stares at him in stunned silence. "Surely you realise that is far too dramatic?" He tries eventually, searching his face. Only Hubert's eyrs refuse to meet his, focused on the outstretched arm between them. "Maybe it is, maybe it's not. Any accident on the battlefield can be your last. Have you had a healer look at it at least?" "They are already far too busy as they are." Ferdinand shrugs as much as Hubert's unyielding hold on his hand allows. "I am sure it will pass on its own." Hubert frowns, fingers still working the tight muscle. "Any weapon needs proper maintenance to serve its purpose." He looks up to meet Ferdinand's eyes again. "I thought you of all people would know that." Ferdinand's lips form a tight line, then finally, finally, he sighs. "I... concede your point. It is just..." He hesitates for a moment. "There is still so much to be done. I... I can't stand to be so useless." His tone is as pleading as his wounded pride will allow. While Hubert is not known for mercy, just this once he can try a compromise. "What you can do is check in with a healer. Preferably Manuela or someone else who likes you enough to not say you're fine just to get you out of their hair." Ferdinand makes a face but says nothing as Hubert continues. "If they deem you well enough for fighting, I will reconsider the battalion assignment. But if they decide you must take time to rest and heal, you will do so without another word. Do we have a deal?" Ferdinand considers it for only a moment. "Very well. I will go see someone about this." "Today," Hubert adds with emphasis, eyes boring into him. Reluctantly, he allows Ferdinand's hand to slip from his grasp as the man stands up. "Of course. The sooner I have someone confirm I am fine, the better," Ferdinand says, his confidence coming back in full force. "Then you will have to admit you were wrong." Hubert huffs a laugh. "Then see to that."
