The door/portal to seemingly dark and empty space, located right in the sternum of the bust, links to these definitions for me. I view this piece as a representation of the loss of self that occurs when one is alienated from their community, labeled as “other” #ConArtInSitu

I looked up what the title of the work/the words across the bust mean, and discovered:

Lous - a person or thing worthy of contempt and ostracism

Evitisnes - avoided

At the same time, it distinguishes itself from its influences through the decorative work on the surface of the piece. Though also nodding to old artifacts such as illuminated manuscripts, the idea of using a form such as the human body as a canvas is, to me, contemporary #ConArtInSitu

To me, this work is an example of how blurry the lines of contemporary are. This piece is contemporary in that it was created this year. However it invokes a classical style of sculpture and figure, most often seen in stone and marble #ConArtInSitu

I was drawn to this piece due to the incredible intricacy and line work of the composition. It coveys quite well the ornate grandeur of medieval architecture that one might come across in Europe, and is subsequently romanticized here in the US. I was impressed that this only uses ink! #ConArtInSitu

the computer used for this piece is not real, instead created by the artist out of textile. It was likely handmade/handsewn, and represents an old “cutesy” version of a MacBook, invoking a sense of being a child’s toy. I took this to be a statement on SHEINS use of child labor #ConArtInSitu

The interesting thing here is the inclusion of reporting on the violations, SHEIN ads, and windows of the shopping platform all opened at once. In this way, the artist shows the insidious ecosystem of SHEIN, and how it has persevered though its wrongdoings are known #ConArtInSitu

There is a lot going on in this work. Due to the “tabs” open on the screen of the computer, I assume part of its agenda is to address the environmental/sustainability and human rights violations perpetrated by SHEIN, a Chinese fast fashion clothing brand #ConArtInSitu

I spent quite a while with this piece, as I was drawn in by the vibrant unrealistic colora and the monochromatic patterns created by the yarn incisions on the canvas. After sitting with it, I am still puzzling over the meaning and title of this piece to the artist and to me #ConArtInSitu

Still life, to me, represents a similar meditation practice to that emphasized in a piece I sat with at DAM, “American Grasslands” by Karen Kitchel: the intentional act of paying attention to details of the minute and mundane in your environment #ConArtInSitu

Though I am not a painter, I also appreciate and recognize the skill that goes into still life style, which the complexities of perspective, light, and color theory to make the object realistic, and what I understand to be three of the most challenging painting techniques to master #ConArtInSitu

I’ve always appreciated still life paintings, because they bring me a real sense of calm and concentration. I love to look at the objects the artists chose to include in the study, and puzzle over what those choices mean and why they were made #ConArtInSitu

I was really drawn this this piece because of the beautiful color of the clay, and thinking it may be a set of rocks from afar. Up close, the contrast between the ordered surface pattern and the subsequent addition of loose sediment gave a lot of visual interest #ConArtInSitu

However, the layers in this piece are so small and precise, it is obvious they were created intentionally by the artists. It kind of reminds me of the 3d printed ceramics I have seen previously, though there is no info on that in the label. #ConArtInSitu

According the the label, this piece was created using wild clay, sand, and rocks from Golden, CO. The lines on this forms in this piece remind me of the stratigraphy you would usually find along a roadcut or stream bank from natural geomorphic process #ConArtInSitu

The shadows cast on the white walls of the display case remind me of watersheds displayed on a topographic map, with different orders of streams branching into each other as they rush downhill to the main river. It’s fascinating how natures patterns replicate across scales #ConArtInSitu

The way this piece was illuminated from the inside bulb resulted in a continuation of the work to the outside environment through the web of shadows it projected over its surroundings. Through this, the piece interacts with the world around it in a really cool way #ConArtInSitu

What will happen as computer technology (especially AI) continues to infiltrate the art world? This is a question far beyond the scope of my art discussion abilities, but it weighs on me after spending time with this undoubtedly beautiful computer generated chandelier in a nature show #ConArtInSitu

I have not yet come to a conclusion on my thoughts about the effectiveness and authenticity of this work, knowing its design and creation process. I do find the inclusion of biotic processes as the basis for the generative code program to be interesting, but it doesn't ease my wariness #ConArtInSitu
