these are behaviors and beliefs that seem utterly bonkers to someone who doesn’t care about them. their equivalent of “just pick an apple”

carol is utterly shocked when the sprouts store closes up, seemingly unaware about how much effort it takes to keep it running. manousos refuses to “steal” anything, to the point where he won’t even accept medical treatment without owing debt for it (paying who!?).

it is partly why the other 12 are all from less individualistic cultures that arent the west—india, japan, etc, etc. the idea that other people might not all want to cure the world as her is literally foreign to her as an american.

and she finds the idea that other people might enjoy or value things she doesn’t to be disgusting or obviously wrong. she couldnt even fathom why someone might *like her own book series* beyond concluding that they must have been stupid shallow idiots
December 23, 2025 at 2:26 PM
it is deliberate. she is both grieving but also an incurious middle class american who has never has to question any of the human systems that let her live as she does. she doesn’t think about the work required to keep the lights on or restock her grocery store.

it is odd to me when i see ppl reading it as anti ai. carol is just such an asshole and wants whats worst for everyone in this incredibly selfish, incurious way. she just seems like the obvious bad guy

this is partly b/c in lots of (mainly poor) places facebook is one of few sites that you can access w free/extremely cheap internet plans. facebook may as well be the internet in those countries

this is just a conspiracy theory at this point then. you could say that literally any news outlet that doesn’t support the conclusion that ai water usage is high must be bought off.

my understanding is that its basically saying “if you know *literally nothing* about your problem, then you can make no optimizations”.

the upshot is that you almost always know at least *something* about your problem!

and all of the human characters are even canonically nonbinary!

I do not understand what you are trying to say. A data center is a specific thing that does a specific task: it allows other businesses to rent computers much in the same way a landlord allows other businesses to rent a building. That isn't the same thing as it ‘allowing anything’
December 3, 2025 at 1:19 AM
This does not make a ton of sense. Plenty of data centers are general purpose—A company simply rents some number of computers from the datacenter, and thousands of companies are all technically sharing space in the same building. This is how AWS, Azure, and GCP all work.

(This is not to say every implementation of AI is good or useful, of course.)
