...the American geneticist James Neel independently proposed the same hypothesis, publishing it in English in the journal 'Medicine'. Neel was then credited as the first person to describe the inheritance mechanism for sickle cell anaemia.

This reminded me of a similar situation I found when researching sickle cell anaemia for my MRes: the Brazilian doctor Jesse Accioly published his hypothesis for the inheritance mechanism of the disease in 1947, in a Brazilian journal of restricted circulation, in Portuguese.
