I loved how inelegantly Fire Emblem: Heroes handled this problem by having the first and last chapter of a story drop be the actual story, and then the middle ones are just a random new characters giving a one sentence elevator pitch of what their deal is

They're a quasi-punishment in that they're extremely inconvenient short-term, but ultimately improve you as a person, so naturally it becomes a queer icon of a show
