Thank you @washingtonpost.com & @bellwak.bsky.social for giving us credit to the Lynnwood hygiene center story. Love the butterfly effect in journalism & love this quote.

“I really take ‘love your neighbor’ seriously,” Rick Steves said to The Washington Post.

A center for homeless residents was set to close. Then Rick Steves stepped in.
Travel writer Rick Steves said he takes the verse ‘love thy neighbor’ seriously and paid more than $2 million to save the facility in Washington state.

This wouldn't have happened if @a-rlnt.bsky.social covered the story last month, and few people would know about until it is closed for good.

Thanks Rick! And also thanks to Angelica Relente (@a-rlnt.bsky.social), the Murrow News Fellow who first reported about the hygiene center. Angelica's reporting was supported by the non-profit @myedmondsnews.bsky.social and the state-funded #WSU journalism fellowships.
Then, about a month ago, I learned that the only hygiene center in my neighborhood was being shut down. The property was being sold...destined to be developed.

Our coverage of the closing of a local hygiene center last month spurred a philanthropist to buy the property for $2M. Donors in WA & other states chipped in remaining $500K to secure the land.

Thanks, @ricksteves.bsky.social

Last week I hung out at the Jean Kim Foundation's Hygiene Center in Lynnwood. It is a one-stop hub for showers, food and clothes.

I got the chance to meet Petey. Having a hot meal is one of his favorite parts of the center. He likes meatloaf.
