Hot take, but if your characters don’t feel like they have chemistry unless their relationship is full of tension, drama, & varying degrees of toxicity, then they don’t actually have any chemistry

Love all of this!! I credit the ATLA writers for trying this with Katara, even though they dropped the ball partway through the series. They just didn’t have the perspective necessary to follow through. I wish more actual eldest daughters got more of a voice in storytelling.

The worst thing TLJ did was sugarcoat Kylo Ren’s character. In TFA he was a brutal warrior who killed and tortured without remorse. He was radicalized into violent extremism, a choice he solidified by killing his father. That was all hand-waved away for some stupid romance that made no sense.

quick question—do people know the lure of the MMC in a dark romance isn’t supposed to be that he’s psychotic? it’s not “he’s hot because he k*lls people & abuses me,” it’s “he’s hot because he seems dangerous but is actually nice to me”

I've made some posts lately about the relationship between romantasy and misogyny. Needless to say, the genre has its rough patches—most notably "dark romantasy," where problematic elements like abuse, predatory behavior, and borderline pedophilia run rampant and are frequently romanticized. (1/8)
