The idea that the PBoC act secretly seems pretty uncontroversial to me too. Also the methods used to estimate demand rather than accepting PBoC official number were not invented to explain the bull market. It’s what has been gone for many years.

Central banks increased the holding by ~1,000 tonnes of gold p.a. 2022-2024 and are increasing again this year. It’s not the only reason the price is up, became a momentum trade, but it was a fundamental driver of the rally particularly early on. It is in the data.

They also bought alot of gold over the last three and half years. Prices are a big part but not all the story. They have been diversifying and that seems to be what held the gold price up when it would normally have fallen with rising interest rates from ‘22 on.

More common to hold in an etf or through a vaulting company. Very high fees to have the physical metal delivered, and then the risk of theft means a need for insurance etc.

Gold can alway go higher before it pops. This may be the end of the bull run but there were many false pops on the way to the top in 2011. And then many false bottoms before it reached its lows.
