For something less anecdotal, Jon Peterson’s “The Elusive Shift” is a great look at how people have disagreed about how to play D&D since the 70s

That’s the dominant narrative in my experience. Actual play has certainly shaped new players’ expectations but I think there was a good amount of people even before that who were looking to experience a story and not just gain XP
